Production workshop 12 × 21 m in Atyrau

An insulated production workshop measuring 12.0 × 21.0 metres and 6.0 metres high, with an annex. Portal frames of cold-formed profiles span 12 metres with no intermediate columns. The annex is shaped to the plot boundary: in plan it is a wedge, 9 metres deep at one end and tapering to nothing at the other.

Structural solution

The structure consists of steel portal frames, bracing, rafter and roof beams. Spatial rigidity is achieved through rigid connections between all elements.

A 12-metre span with no columns

Duo-pitch portal frames span the workshop over 12 metres — there are no columns inside to get in the way of equipment layout or vehicle movement. The eaves sit at 6.0 metres, the ridge at 7.585 metres. Frames are set at 3-metre centres, seven bays over 21 metres of length.

A wedge-shaped annex

The plot is irregular, so the annex was built as a wedge: 9 metres deep at one end, tapering to nothing at the other. Every roof beam in the annex is a different length, from Pr-3 through Pr-23, with battens laid over them. Geometry like this is far easier to assemble from light profiles than from heavy rolled steel.

Profiles and steel

Frame members, purlins and bracing are made from cold-formed steel profiles to TU 1121-001-87370346-2015, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 280 mm high. Frame columns and rafters are paired 250 × 2.0 mm C-profiles, the lattice is 150 mm, and the annex roof beams are 280 mm. Steel grade S245 to GOST 27772-88.

Insulated envelope

The building was designed as insulated from the outset. The roof uses 150 mm panels with mineral wool insulation, which are accounted for in the load calculation at 26.1 kg/m² nominal. The walls are clad in sandwich panels, with profiled sheet at the base.

Load calculation

Static analysis was performed in the SCAD software suite. Loads were taken to SP 20.13330.2016: nominal wind pressure 0.23 kPa, design load on the roof frame 1.9 kPa. The total design roof load is 186.7 kg/m², of which 120 kg/m² is snow.

Screw-fixed assembly

Frame members are connected with Ø6.3 self-drilling screws, and the column bases are fixed to the foundation with Sormat S-Ka 12 × 128 wedge anchors. Welding and gas cutting of galvanized profile were not permitted — the zinc coating stays intact.

Corrosion protection

The frame is made of galvanized profile. Areas damaged on site were restored with protective coatings to SP 28.13330.2012, and carbon steel elements were painted with two coats of PF-115 enamel over GF-021 primer. Fabrication and erection followed GOST 23118-2012 and SP 70.13330.2012.
