Sports Hall

Sports hall 21 × 36 m in Tengiz

A sports hall measuring 21.0 × 36.0 metres with a height of 6.5 metres. The structure is built from steel portal frames made of cold-formed profiles: the playing hall spans 15 metres with no intermediate columns at all, with a 6-metre-wide annex running alongside it for ancillary rooms.

Structural solution

The structure consists of steel portal frames and bracing. Spatial rigidity is achieved through rigid connections between all elements.

A hall with no intermediate columns

The key requirement for a sports hall is clear space. Duo-pitch portal frames span the playing area over 15 metres: there is not a single column inside the hall to get in the way of play. The ridge sits at 8.53 metres, the eaves at 6.5 metres.

Frames at 3-metre centres

Along the building the frames are set at 3-metre centres — twelve bays over 36 metres of length. The close spacing made it possible to use light profiles where heavy trusses would normally be required.

Cold-formed profiles only

Frame members, purlins and bracing are made from cold-formed steel profiles 100, 150, 200 and 250 mm high. Frame columns and rafters are built up from paired 250 mm C-profiles 2 mm thick, with 150 mm profiles in the lattice. Steel grade S245 to GOST 27772-88.

Annex for ancillary rooms

A 6-metre-wide annex with a mono-pitch roof runs alongside the playing hall — changing rooms, coaching room and equipment store. It is part of the same structural frame rather than a separate addition.

Load calculation

Static analysis was performed in the SCAD software suite. Loads were taken to SP 20.13330.2011: nominal wind pressure 0.38 kPa, design load on the roof frame 1.8 kPa — accounting for the local snow load.

Assembled without welding

Frame members are connected with Ø6.3 self-drilling screws, and the column bases are fixed to the foundation with 12 × 120 mm wedge anchors. Welding and gas cutting of galvanized profile on site were not permitted — the zinc coating stays intact.

Corrosion protection

The frame is made of galvanized profile. Areas damaged on site were restored with protective coatings to SP 28.13330.2012. Fabrication and erection followed GOST 23118-2012 and SP 70.13330.2012.
