Shanyraq trade house, 30 × 72 m, Atyrau

A two-storey trade house measuring 30.0 × 72.0 metres and 7.5 metres high. The hard part of this project was not its size but its second storey: the retail floor is designed for an imposed load of 300 kg/m², and the total design load reaches 577 kg/m² — three times what the roof carries.

Structural solution

The structure consists of steel columns, trusses, purlins and bracing. The floor is formed by primary and secondary beams together with additional columns on the ground floor.

Two storeys on a light frame

The second storey is what sets this apart from a hangar. A light profile carries a roof easily, where snow dominates the load. A retail floor behaves differently: people, goods and equipment stand on it. So the entire ground-floor frame was designed for a different order of loading.

A floor carrying 577 kg per square metre

The design load on the floor is 5.66 kPa, or 577 kg/m². Of that, 300 kg/m² is the imposed retail load and 204 kg/m² is the 50 mm screed over the profiled decking; the rest is the decking itself, the finishes and the weight of the steelwork. For comparison, the roof of the same building carries 181 kg/m².

Decking that works together with the screed

Profiled decking is laid over the floor beams and fixed to every beam in every rib. That fixing turns the decking and screed into a structure that works together with the beams rather than simply resting on them.

Additional ground-floor columns

Additional columns on a 6-metre grid sit beneath the floor — K-3, made of paired 150 mm profiles. They rise only to floor level and take out the span that would otherwise require heavy rolled steel from the beams. On the upper floor these columns are gone.

A roof on 15-metre trusses

Above the second storey are FS trusses spanning 15 metres, bearing on the outer and centre axes. The truss was engineered for this building: twelve node types and nine sheets of member detailing. The ridge sits at 9.71 metres.

Profiles and steel

Columns, trusses, beams, purlins and bracing are made from cold-formed steel profiles 100, 150, 200 and 250 mm high, steel grade S245 to GOST 27772-88. Columns are built from paired profiles: 200 mm at the perimeter, 250 mm at the centre. Column bases are anchored with three anchor sizes — 12 × 120, 12 × 150 and 16 × 150 mm — matched to the load at each support.

Insulation and assembly

Walls and roof are insulated with 100 mm sandwich panels. Frame members are connected with Ø6.3 × 25 self-drilling screws, with bolts to GOST 7798-70 in bolted joints. Welding and gas cutting of galvanized profile were not permitted. The detailed drawing set runs to 80 sheets.
